CHAPTER TEN
CASSIE TRIED TO ignore the energy she sensed from Adam as they walked into the clinic. They found Glen communing with his kitten, and through the open door to the kennel area, Tiffany could be seen once again covered by a pile of wriggling, excited puppies.
Pulling her camera out again, she snapped more shots of the kids, wanting to capture the abandoned pleasure on their faces.
“That reminds me,” Adam said, “I’ve been meaning to ask if you have photos of Glen and Tiffany when they were younger. It can be useful sometimes.”
“There aren’t many. I checked my sister’s apartment and didn’t find much. Naturally I took some pics whenever I visited, but they aren’t studio quality or anything. Very casual.”
It frustrated her to think that Glen and Tiffany’s childhood had gone largely unrecorded by their mother. With smartphones, it was so easy.
“How about annual school shots?”
“They...uh, lack personality.” While Cassie appreciated having the school photos, they revealed lonely, hurting kids and she didn’t want strangers to see the twins that way. “The lack of early childhood pictures won’t work against them, will it?”
“Don’t worry, it’s just another resource. Occasionally a casting director will ask if any are available, but it wouldn’t be a deciding factor. Anyhow, I can always take a look at the ones you snapped informally if see if they’d work. For future reference.”
From the sudden discomfort on Adam’s face, casting directors might be something he regretted mentioning. “Casting director” sounded as if it was connected to acting rather than modeling, so he might be concerned about building up Tiffany’s hopes about becoming an actress. Cassie just hoped he wasn’t keeping another secret from her, the way he had about Shane Wolcott of Mindspinder Games attending the sci-fi convention to anonymously evaluate the kids. It gave her an uneasy sensation to think someone had been watching them—would she have caught on if she had better parenting instincts?
“In case I didn’t say it earlier,” Adam continued, “I want to thank you for giving me more insight into my dad. I suppose I’ve never considered that the way I react might be part of the problem between us. Maybe if I change, it will help. At least I’ll give it a try.”
“I’m glad what I said wasn’t too much of a problem.”
To avoid any more conversation, Cassie moved closer to Glen so she could get pictures from a different angle. She was glad when Adam headed for the exterior door they’d come through earlier. Keeping him at a distance was the wisest course.

A FUNNY TINGLE traveled up Glen’s arm from where the kitten was licking his fingers. It was weird. He hadn’t even known that he liked cats. Not that he’d hated them, either, just that he didn’t know one way or the other.
Leila had said the kitten had chosen him. That was cool. Hopefully, Oreo wouldn’t forget him in between visits, until he could take her home. That’s what he’d decided to call her, Oreo.
Aunt Cassie snapped several pictures of him and Oreo.
